009 – The Tortoise & The Hare

Image

The Tortoise and the Hare are perpetually at the starting line in this rocked-out public art piece along a biking/jogging/walking trail in Henderson, Nevada. This art rock uses a metal cage in the shape of the Tortoise and the Hare to hold large rocks in place. This type of caged rock has become popular in the Las Vegas Valley as both Public Art Pieces and retaining walls and can be seen at new parks including Charlie Frias Park (at Tropicana and Decatur in Las Vegas) and Sunset Park (just east of Eastern Ave. on Sunset, in Las Veags) and of course, the Henderson Trail System along St. Rose Parkway.

The Tortoise and The Hare is one of Aesops fables. The exact ‘lesson’ of the fable is up to interpretation. But I think anyone who happens upon this public art piece will be enthralled with both the Tortoise and the Hare lining up at the Start line to begin their race.

You can learn more about The Tortoise and The Hare at their Wikipedia page here and more about the Henderson, Nevada Trail System here.

Photo note: I played with the picture in Photoshop Elements using the “Color Variations” feature to enhance the color of the rocks and wire making up the Tortoise and the Hare. I like how much richer the color of the figures are in the picture above, over the original picture, which can be seen below.
